2007 AWARD WINNERS

Many Congratulations to all!
1st Quarter

James Kliber was nominated for his superb efforts on the field, and for his morale-boosting spirit and substantial commitment off the field during Colts Friday evening training sessions. The Colts benefit greatly from receiving training from such a talented player. He is a credit to the club.

James was presented with his certificate by third eleven captain, Garry Sapsford, at a school assembly. He has decided to allocate his funds to the provision of 20/20 Finals Day kit..

2nd Quarter

Joe Morris was nominated for his great support for the Under 9s A team. He has attended every single match and scored and coached. Joe has helped to select a Combined Team against Essex Under 9s and puts in a lot of his own time to run extra coaching sessions during the week. He offered to be the coach for the Combined Team (Brentwood, Hutton, Upminster and Shenfield) on match days.

Joe is 18 and his dedication towards coaching the youngsters is superb.

3rd Quarter

Charlie Sutherland was nominated for always being at the club on colts nights, helping others as well as further developing his own skills. He has deservedly broken into the first team this season and shown great maturity with the bat for someone who is only 14.

Charlie's award funds will be spent on colts' match balls, scorebook, First Aid kit replenishment, gloves, pads, stumps and trophies.

Charlie received his award, on President's Day, from Dudley Payne, the Deputy Mayor of Brentwood.

4th Quarter

James Borman was the worthy recipient of the 4th quarter 2007 Jack Petchey Award.

James won a place in the 3rd team in 2007 despite strong competition from senior members and has made a great contribution to the U15 team, not only bowling and batting but with his spirit and sportsmanship. He was a huge success bowling spin (he never did like all that running up to the wicket) and will be one of the first names on the Matchplay team sheet for 2008.

He has been an invaluable help on Friday evening coaching sessions and is often one of the last to leave.

James has decided to put his award funds towards Drill Tops for the Under 16 team in 2008.

James recived his award, at indoor winter nets, from David Brewster - the Club's Child Welfare Officer.

Leader's Award

Garry Sapsford has been highly influential in promoting the involvement of young people in a variety of sports, including cricket. Garry is head of PE at Shenfield High School and puts a huge amount of effort, both during school hours and to a very large extent in his own time, into promoting youth involvement in sport. The recent success of the School's cricket, football and basketball teams at county and national level, is testimony to his efforts.

In support of his role within the school Garry actively encourages the involvement of young people in sports clubs beyond the school gates. Over the last 5 years or so he has been instrumental in encouraging youngsters from the School to join and play an active part in the nearby Shenfield Cricket Club. As a keen cricketer himself, Garry became 3rd XI captain in summer 2006 and was thus responsible for team selection; such was his success in encouraging student participation that there were several occasions when the 3rd XI team constituted a majority of current or former students from the school. Over the last 2 or 3 years the 1st and 2nd XI teams have included a number of former Shenfield School students all of whom were initially introduced to the cricket club as a result of Garry's efforts.

All the current SCC colts sides, from U11 through to U16, contain a high proportion of current Shenfield School students, almost entirely as a result of a Garry Sapsford introduction, directly or indirectly. Through his infectious energy and enthusiasm many youngsters have been encouraged to enjoy a sport which they might otherwise not have considered. In 2006, Shenfield High School 6th form cricket team was one of only two English state schools to participate in the national schools 20/20 cricket competition. That they did so with remarkable success, beating 3 highly regarded non-state schools in the early rounds of the competition, serves to further illustrate Garry's efforts in this area.

Garry has without doubt demonstrated, in an outstanding way, an ability to encourage and motivate young people to participate in a worthwhile sporting activity and throughly deserves a Jack Petchey Leaders Award.

Garry's award funds will be put towards net resurfacing.

Garry received his award from Dudley Payne, Deputy Mayor, on President's Day.
