Jack Petchey Award Scheme

2008 AWARD WINNERS

Many Congratulations to all!
January

Joe Pratt has won the Jack Petchey Award for January 2008. This is in recognition of his help coaching the U9s and U11s on Friday evenings, his assistance in winter nets, having topped the bowling averages for the u15s (a "year young") and regularly featuring in the u16s.

Joe is a regular helper with the younger colts throughout both the summer and winter. His all-round cricketing skills provide him with the understanding of what needs to be conveyed to the colts. His organization and communication skills make him very effective in doing this. Joe's enthusiasm is infectious and helps to nurture a hunger for cricket with those colts that he assists.

He's ever present on a summer Friday evening and was often there all day Saturday last season, even though he rarely got a game for the men's team (will undoubtedly play this season).

Joe has decided to put his money towards portable nets for driving and fielding practice.

Joe received his award, at indoor winter nets, from Martin Ekers - Under 13A Team Manager.

Dave Kay (U-14 last season) enjoyed good form for colts, seniors and school last season. In the school's U-14 Essex County Cup final he became only the 4th person to ever get a century in a school's county final (Ravi Bopara and Nick Knight were two of the 3 others!) with a match winning knock of 105 in a 30 over game.

Dave is a very dedicated young man who is committed to improving and plays the game with enthusiasm and a smile on his face. Dave was called up by Essex last season and has had trials again this winter.

Dave has decided to put his money towards spring loaded stumps, keeping gloves and extra outfield strips.

Dave was presented with his award during an assembly at Shenfield High School. He was barely visible in what was otherwise a super photo taken there, so here's one of him later, with Garry Sapsford, Head of PE at Shenfield School and Shenfield CC 3rd XI Captain.

Oliver Castell (Under 11 player) is always supporting and helping the indoor coaches at the colts winter indoor training. He turns up early for sessions to help in set up, and stays late to help the cricket coaches clear away. He helps his own peer group during the week, reminding them of their individual coaching start times, and supported and helped manage the younger players in the interclub indoor matches with scoring, and umpiring assistance throughout last winter.

Ollie has decided to spend his award money on crash mats.

Henry Owers (Under 16 player)has proved invaluable in supporting all the junior colts players through the Sunday afternoon indoor winter pre-season training sessions. He has organised inter club sides and administered a mini league tournament for the various age groups. Always looking to help and advise our younger players, he has proved a great source of encouragement and knowledge to them.

Henry was a regular member of both u15 and u16 sides last year as well as making important contributions for the senior sides later in the summer. Although highly regarded and extremely effective as a reliable pace bowler, Henry would often contribute with the bat too and has a safe pair of hands. Safe hands came to the forefront on a Friday evening too, when Henry would be found with many of his peer group, encouraging and supporting the Under 11s to develop their skills. Never one to dash away after training Henry often remains to continue to foster the excellent bonds being built throughout the club at all age groups.

Andy Ross brought his cheerful disposition to the club whenever he was there and produced numerous performances of value, with the bat, ball and gloves.

His runs would often come quickly (his hockey expertise to the fore) and although productive on the leg side, he would frequently score runs all around the ground.

He is a more than useful bowler at a sharp pace, and could also spin the ball prodigiously if required. He had kept wicket for his school side, and stepped up to do that for us when we needed him to.

Despite involving considerable travel, he was always keen to help train the younger boys on a Friday and attended whenever transport could be arranged and school commitments allowed.

Andy has decided his award money should be spent on bowling machine balls, 12 "Incrediballs" and keeping glove sets for the Under 9s.

Daniel Chapman was nominated for his continuing help with assisting the coaches on a Friday night. As his training is on a Thursday night he gives up more of his free time to help out with the younger colts whenever he can.

Daniel was presented with his award by Under 13B Manager, Alan Moreton.

George Meaney was our leading run scorer and leading wicket taker for the u11 age group in 2008.

All the Friday night coaches have been impressed with this player. Not just from the fact that George is a talented cricket already, but in his manner and attitude towards all that is asked of him. In matches, whilst having the desire to win, he recognises that playing the game in the right spirit is very important, and always shows a sporting attitude towards the opposition. In training he is very supportive of his age group peers, always encouraging and helping where he can in all the practice games.

Daniel was presented with his award on President's Day, by Roger Burrows, our late President's son. Under 11 Manager, David Castell, is on George's left.

George Pratt stepped up from last year's U11 side to the U13s this year and quickly made an impression with bat, ball and in the field, as well as being eager to take the gloves behind the stumps if the opportunity presented itself.

He quickly made an impression at the top of the order, contributing the fourth highest total in the side, even though he was one of the youngest boys playing.

George made an important contribution with the ball too, finishing fourth in the bowling averages, and he took six valuable catches.

He was almost ever present on Friday nights, helping the younger boys wherever possible. When the Shenfield adult sides needed him, he was quick to respond, collecting a "five-for" on his 4th team debut.

George was presented with his Jack Petchey award by U13 Manager Martin Ekers.

Oliver Ives has been with the club for 6 years. He has developed through the various colts age groups, and has also played for the clubs senior sides as well when required. Voted as 2007 U15 clubman of the year, he has again made himself available this season, helping with both indoor/external younger colts' training throughout 2008. Although suffering from a serious medical condition during most of this season, he has still always attended the club to support and help out in various capacities with a smile on his face. He has also proved to be is a big helper for all the colts' age group managers this summer, scoring and helping around the club whenever he can. Not always selected for his own age group team, but whenever called upon he has always given a good playing account of himself and never let the side down. His commitment to training has helped build a great camaraderie within the whole squad off the field, and earned him great respect from his peers on it.

Sam Samarasekara has made a little piece of Shenfield Cricket Club history this season, representing ALL the full Mens' senior Saturday teams, also the Sunday side during the season. The 18-year old who is now a very talented wicket keeper claimed a five wicket match haul to his name this season whilst playing for the 3rd X1. Sam has been very supportive in encouraging and working with all the younger colts' wicket-keepers. He intends to hold a juniors 'master class' specialist keeping session in our indoor winter training programme, to specifically encourage all our junior wicket keepers to keep sharp during the 'off' season.

Elliott Joyner was the U15A Captain this year, played all but one game for the U16 Matchplay team, played a couple of times for the U15Bs, played several 3rd and 4th men's team matches and even played in the men's 2nds once when they were short. Importantly, he also helped at Friday night coaching as well as attending men's training night on a few occasions in addition to his own regular night. Elliott has put his award funds toward the cost of the the new matting in the practice nets.

Elliot received his award from Richard Hindley, the club's Petchey Co-ordinator. Elliot features in another photo at the end of this page.

Jamie Walton was the only "ever present" player in the cricket club's 1st XI team during the 2008 season. As a batsman he contributed well over 300 runs during the league campaign. He also he played a big part in mid-week 20/20 cup team - including 2 unbeaten half centuries in consecutive matches. He has been with the club for several seasons, and has proved an influential character around the clubhouse - finding time to mentor many of our younger club members both on and off the field.

Jamie received his award from 1st XI skipper Dave Wright and 3rd XI skipper Garry Sapsford.

Vanessa Ekers Colts membership secretary has worked relentlessly for the colts section all through this winter already. She has organised the indoor training schedules/administration for all members, together with being a focal and contact point for any new interested player - ensuring they become involved with the club prior to the outdoor seasons starts.

Vanessa has created a new registration process for the 2008 season, and has worked with our child welfare officer on many issues to ensure Shenfield CC complies with all protection issues. She has produced forms, sent them out, collated information, assisted with information for the developing website. The whole club is indebted to her forward-looking and administration skills. She finds time to support all the team managers and coaches when ever required, and indeed liaises with other clubs concerning future fixtures. She ensures that not only do all the managers have wickets to play on - but that they all have snacks/beverages to finish with! Her energy has also seen her already planning numerous BBQs, raffles and support charity events on behalf of the colts sections for 2008. We are lucky to have her.

The Mayor, Dudley Payne, presented Vanessa with her certificate and medal during a ceremony at the club on 13th February 2009.
