Fly Casting
The cricket ground was recently the venue for a most unusual event, involving the entire outfield. The event was a competition, sponsored by Trout Fisherman magazine, and arranged by Michael Marshall, Secretary of the British Fly Casting Club. Michael is a familiar figure on the Shenfield outfield, practising with his various rods, 3 or 4 times a day.
Over 30 participants, including one lady and 6 members, came from as far as Durham, North Yorkshire, West Midlands, Norfolk and Sussex.
The competition consisted of 9 teams of 3, casting for various trophies, including that for highest aggregate score.
Nine participants cast 25 yards and four cast 30 yards (a good average cast is 20 yards). After 90 minutes tuition, five upgraded to between 25 and 30 yards and two from 30 to 35 yards, including the lady.
