The first home league game of the 2026 season for the 1's ended in defeat against a good Oakfield Parkonians side. Losing the toss, the opposing captain was delighted to send us in to bat on a very decent wicket. Our batting never really got going, with only Tom Arnold (34) and Alex Rickenbach (49, coming in at 10) helping to get our score to a lowly 187, probably around 60 short of where we should have been. Indeed, if it wasn't for a last wicket partnership of 50 between Alex and Ollie Castell (19 n.o), we could have seen a very early finish. They managed to take the innings to the last over before Alex tried to put whatever shine that was left on the ball onto his bat and was bowled. Would he have batted sensibly if he knew he needed one more run for a well-deserved half-century? Only he can tell you..........
With the first wicket falling after only three balls, there was optimism that we could make early in-roads into their batting, but that was as good as it got, as, despite managing to take seven wickets overall, their batting never really looked troubled. Twenty-eight extras helped them get to their target in 38 overs, a problem that needs to be eradicated sooner rather than later, though it is an improvement from the 43 conceded the week before. Tom Arnold was the leading wicket-taker with three.
We stay at home for our next league game, against Goresbrook. Although it's our first defeat, we need to get back on the victory trail straight away.
