Thrilling Climax to Argus Cup
SHENFIELD HOME IN LAST OVER
BILLERICAY 99 – 4 SHENFIELD 100 – 8

SHENFIELD CRICKET CLUB became the first local side to win the Argus Knockout Cup last week in a thrilling climax that had the many spectators sitting on the edge of their seats.

The final played at the Old County Ground matched two local sides for the first time in the competition's history. And what a match it turned out to be.

Never has there been a final that has swung from one side's favour to the other quite so often.

Billericay were first to face the 15 eight ball overs and at the completion had built a total of 99 that looked to have put the game beyond Shenfield's reach.

The man to cause Shenfield most anxiety was Billericay opener Geoff Foster. Featuring in a first wicket stand of 56 with Tett, Foster dominated his side's innings with a hard hit 67 not out.

Shenfield's reply took an early setback when in-form Graham Jones was bowled for three with the score at 15. But fellow opener Graham Bruce was joined by big hitting Dave Sewell and together they put on a brisk 33 before Bruce was caught for 28.

Bruce's departure signalled the start of a Shenfield batting collapse that was to return bowler Rodney Thorn the startling figures of 7 – 8.

Billericay skipper Cliff Taylor took a calculated gamble by bringing the slow right armer into the attack, a move which proved to be completely justified. At one stage Thorn had claimed six wickets in 15 balls with one over bringing four wickets for no runs.

This remarkable performance swung the game back in Billericay's favour and it only seemed a matter of time before the cup was Billericay bound.

However, Shenfield were not finished. Tailenders Alan Stewart and Chris Wright came together with 34 runs needed to reach the required total and immediately crack the whole issue wide open once again.

Playing an intelligent knock Stewart sensibly waited for the right ball to crack through the Billericay defences as he and Wright took the score along to 83 with two overs remaining.

As the tension mounted and with only two wickets to go the match was still wide open. But the Shenfield heroes managed to squash any doubts as they hammered their way to a most exciting victory with four balls remaining.
