U16 Matchplay Competition on Sunday (12th September
In only the second time in their 100 year history, Shenfield Cricket Club made it to the final of the U16 Matchplay Competition on Sunday (12th September) and faced a strong Wanstead CC side with the fixture being played at Saffron Walden.
On a near perfect wicket SCC won the toss and put Wanstead into bat. A strong performance from the two openers (Thinod Balage – 101 and Zoraiz Saeed – 68) helped Wanstead finish their innings on 268 for 3.
In reply Shenfield started confidently but losing two wickets in the second over put the team on the back foot and despite a fight back with Will Howard – 84 and Tom Arnold 57 not out Shenfield just could not get back into the game with the team all bowled out for 189 runs.
Despite the loss, the team and those travelling supporters had a fantastic day and celebrated the achievement of a team of mainly 14 and 15 year olds reaching the final in the club’s centenary year! See squad photo here and spectators photo here.

SHENFIELD CC REACH U16 MATCHPLAY FINAL
Shenfield's U15 squad have reached the final of the Trevor Bailey Matchplay Final after a four wicket win against Bishops Stortford CC. Winning the toss, SCC put their opponents into bat who, with three wickets from both Tom Arnold and Freddie Thorne, were limited to 173 in their 40 overs.
There was a nervous start for SCC as the 2 openers fell early, leaving the middle order of Freddie Thorne (21), Nathan Killiea (and Josh Kirby (36) to bring SCC back into contention with Tom Arnold and Daniel Green taking the team over the line with 10 overs left.
The final will be played next Sunday (12th September), at Saffron Walden, against Wanstead CC who overcame Springfield CC in their Semi Final.

Marylebone Cricket Club - Extract from their latest newsletter.
In South Essex, Shenfield CC started a week of centenary celebrations with a match against MCC on Sunday, 22nd August. The Club relied heavily on J. Hobbs, who arrived at the crease at 17 for 2. He scored 89 runs from 52 deliveries, hitting eight fours and seven sixes to help lift MCC to 178 all out. Tom Ballington (four for 51) and Lesiba Ngoepe (four for 65) were Shenfield's standout bowlers.
A fascinating chase ensued. When Ballington was removed, Shenfield were on 66 for 7 following a remarkable spell of four wickets for four runs from 49 balls, as C. da Silva and C. Stephens wrenched the game back in MCC's favour. Shenfield captain Ollie Ekers (45) and Tom Austin (37) gave the hosts hope but, ultimately, they fell 18 runs short.
18th August 2021
The U15s have reached the Semi Final of the U16 Trevor Bailey Cup competition after winning their quarter final match against Loughton CC at the De Rougemont Cricket Ground on Sunday (15th August).
Losing the toss, Loughton elected to bat first and were held to 178 all out with Evan Ackerman (7-32-3), Adam Pryor (7-23-2) and Daniel Green (5-19-2) the pick of the bowlers. Both Shenfield openers opened steadily, building what would be a great foundation to reach their target of 179 in the 29th over with William Howard finishing on 101 off 85 balls.
The Semi Final against Bishops Stortford CC will be played this Sunday (22nd August) again at the De Rougemont Cricket Ground with the game commencing at 12 Noon. Everyone is welcome to come and support the team.

Shenfield Cricket Club’s U15 squad
They reached the quarter final of the U16 Matchplay competition after winning their final group game against Colchester & E.Essex CC on Sunday (25th July).
Batting first, SCC finished on 323 for 8 off their 40 overs, with Will Howard (68), Max Toolan (70) and Nathan Killea (66) all on form in the middle.
Facing an uphill task,Colchester & East Essex were immediately put under pressure, loosing two wickets in a fantastic opening over bowled by Tom Arnold. Wickets continued to fall as SCC bowled their opponents out for 112 with Tom Arnold (6-24-3), Adam Pryor (3-15-3) and Max Toolan (2-4-2) the stars with the ball.
This was a brilliant win underpinned by a great team performance with all the players contributing their success.

Byron Wyngard
Shenfield CC were deeply saddened to hear about the untimely passing of Byron Wyngard.
Byron will be remembered as a great cricketer and a genuinely all round good guy.
We send our sincere condolences to Byron’s family, friends and cricketing comrades.
Here is a photo of the lovely Byron.

Two players who new Byron well want to share their thoughts with us -

Ollie Ekers
It comes with great sadness and as a huge shock to us all to learn about the passing of Byron Wyngard.
Shenfield Cricket Club had the pleasure of hosting Byron for the summer of 2015. He was an incredibly talented cricketer whose efforts helped us gain promotion to the Premier League for the 2016 season. More importantly, he was an immensely kind and caring person. He was loved by everyone here at Shenfield, with his smile, kind natured personality and winning attitude shining through and onto everyone around him.
We send our sincere condolences to Byron's family, friends and those at his home club of Victoria Cricket Club.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
RIP Byron

Jack Kliber
Byron was the nicest bloke we’d ever meet. He was everything you’d want from an overseas and more - surpassing expectations on the pitch, but more importantly off the pitch. He ability was only matched by his personality.
Our promotion that summer was not coincidental, and our success was down to him. Shenfield CC are in debt to Byron and what he gave us that summer. A quite exceptional 130 jumps to mind that year helped us beat Woodford Wells- in which he hit some incredible shots!
Such was his nature, Byron even hosted Shenfield High Schools tour to Cape Town a year later and less willingly a few of the 2nd teams trip out for a Cape Town test match!
Byron, rest in peace mate. From so many friends at Shenfield CC.

You may be aware that 2021 marks Shenfield Cricket Club's centenary year and we plan to host a number of exciting events over the year to celebrate this.
